Back Pain

Back Pain

If you have had lower back pain, or mid back pain, you are not alone. Back pain is one of the most common reasons people see a doctor or miss days at work.

Back pain can range in intensity from a dull, constant ache to a sudden, sharp, or shooting pain. It can begin suddenly due to an accident or from lifting something heavy, or it can develop over time as we age. Getting too little exercise followed by a strenuous workout can also cause back pain.

There are two types of back pain. Acute or short-term back pain lasts a few days to a few weeks. Most low back pain is acute. It tends to resolve on its own within a few days with self-care, and there is no residual loss of function. In some cases, a few months are required for the symptoms to disappear. About 20% of people with acute low back pain will develop chronic back pain.

Chronic back pain lasts 12 weeks or longer, even after the injury or cause of the pain has been treated. In many cases, pain continues despite medical and surgical treatment. That is why Atlas chiropractic treatment is the first treatment of choice.

If you have general back pain that isn’t in your low-back, it can be hard to determine where the pain starts.

You may have back pain at the bottom of your ribs, or you may have it between your shoulders. Any pain between these regions is considered middle back pain (also called thoracic pain). Mid back pain can be a dull, constant ache or a sudden sharp pain that makes it hard to move and twist.

If you have chronic back pain, it doesn’t always mean there is a medical condition causing it or an underlying disease that can be identified and treated. It may just be from the position of your spine, the tension on your muscles, and decreased nerve signals from the spinal cord, which prevent your body from correcting the problem.

At Atlas Clinics, this is what we address. Muscles control the position of the vertebra in the low back, and all of the nerves that control muscles come from the spinal cord. If they function properly, without restriction, these ‘spinal nerves’ correct spinal imbalance, initiate healing, clean up any damage, and decrease pain.

Unfortunately, in many people, the ‘spinal nerves’ are not functioning at full capacity. This is due to spinal malposition and it is a Catch-22. The back is out, so the nerves can’t work well enough to fix the back. Especially when there is neurological IMBALANCE.

The atlas bone, which is the top bone of your spine, is the primary bone or ‘master switch.’ This bone controls all the nerves that go along the back.

There are many reasons for mid back pain, but the most common are:

  • Muscle irritation of the large muscles in your middle back (overuse or poor

posture habits, like leaning over a desk all day, can develop strains and tightness).

  • Joint concerns or injury to the spine or ribs can cause mid back pain (sometimes, the cause may be linked to a degenerative conditions, like arthritis, which can wear down the joints of the middle back).
  • A malposition of vertebrae (spinal bone) or ribs, which attach to the middle back bones. This type of low back pain can radiate around your sides and can be aggravated by twisting your body or breathing deeply.
  • A compressed nerve around your spine which is causing inflammation and creating pain signals.

Mid back pain is not as common as low-back pain. Most mid back pain is due to spinal and muscle imbalance.

The top vertebrae of the spine, the atlas, protects the nerves as they leave the brain. If the atlas is out of position, it can pinch those nerves, leading to muscle imbalance and pain.

Prompt diagnosis and treatment of middle back pain are essential to control symptoms and reduce the risk of increased pain and disability.

With our consultation and exam process at Atlas Clinics, we will determine if the atlas bone is out of position and if it is dampening the signals coming from the spinal nerves. If it is, we will take a specific series of digital X-rays and run them through spinal engineering software to determine exactly what corrections your atlas requires.

We will then perform a painless, sound-wave-based adjustment to the spine. This will put your atlas back into its optimal position and restore full communication between the spinal nerves and the structures of the back. The spine can now rebalance and repair itself.
