Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Carpal Tunnel Syndrome

Do you suffer from numbness, tingling, or pain in your wrist or hand? Do you have a loss of sensation in some of your fingers and hand weakness? Do you drop things or have trouble picking items up? You may be suffering from Carpal Tunnel Syndrome (CTS).

CTS is a common condition. The carpal tunnel is an area in the wrist where the tendons, the Median Nerve and vessels to your hand and fingers pass through. If this tunnel becomes inflamed, it pushes on the tendons and nerves and compresses them.

When the Median Nerve is compressed, it reacts by causing numbness, tingling, pain, and weakness. These symptoms usually occur in the thumb, pointer, middle, and ring fingers.

A few things cause CTS. You may have inherited it. It may develop during pregnancy or as a result of having diseases such as diabetes or rheumatoid arthritis. Primarily it develops due to repeated use of the hand and wrist over a period of years (hammering, bending, writing, typing, etc.).

In most cases, the symptoms begin slowly and without any specific injury. As the condition gets worse, the symptoms get worse and stay for longer times. If the problem worsens, it can lead to permanent damage to the Median Nerve and permanent damage to the wrist, hand, and fingers.

Historically, the most common way to treat this condition has been through surgery, where they open the wrist and cut the tunnel open, relieving pressure. After this surgery, scar tissue often forms, and CTS returns, requiring additional surgery.

At Atlas Clinics, we treat the top bone of the spine, called the atlas. All of the nerves which run along the arm, wrist, and hand pass through this particular bone. If it is out of position, strain and disruption occur among the nerves. The result is tension and pain in the area.

When you arrive for your Atlas appointment, we will perform a consultation and examination to determine if your atlas is out of position.

If we determine it to be out of position, we will take a specific set of X-rays and then run the information through spinal engineering software.

This tells us how far your atlas is out of it’s proper position, with accuracy down to the millimeter, and exactly what we need to do to correct it.

We will then perform a painless sound wave-based adjustment that will put your atlas back in place, relieving stress and tension on the nerves.
