Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple Sclerosis

Multiple sclerosis (MS) is a nervous system disease that affects your brain and nervous system by damaging the protective coating around the nerves. This slows down and causes disturbances in the communication between the brain and the body.

No one knows what causes MS. It may be an autoimmune disease, which happens when your immune system attacks healthy cells in your body by mistake.

It affects women more than men and usually begins between ages 20 and 40. Usually, the disease is mild, but in some cases, it can progress, and some people lose the ability to write, speak, or walk. The symptoms of MS are unpredictable. Some people develop symptoms slowly, and they get worse over time. Others may have symptoms come on quicker. Some have symptoms that come and go. MS can cause a wide range of symptoms and affect any body part. Each person with the condition is affected differently.

Common symptoms of MS include:

  • Vision problems.
  • Muscle spasms/stiffness/weakness.
  • Coordination, and balance issues.
  • Mobility problems.
  • Memory and thinking concerns.
  • Sensations like numbness or tingling in your arms or legs.
  • Bladder or bowel problems.
  • Pain.

In bad cases, these symptoms may be intense and lead to:

  • Severe fatigue and tiredness.
  • Loss of vision.
  • Double vision.
  • Muscle contraction.
  • Dizziness and vertigo.
  • Powerful body pains.

There is no specific test for MS. Doctors use medical history, physical exam, nerve exam, MRIs, and other tests to diagnose it. And though there is no cure, medicines may slow it down and help control symptoms. Physical and occupational therapy may also help, and Atlas upper cervical chiropractic treatment has been shown to help in some cases.

Our approach to MS at Atlas involves looking at the topmost bone in the spine, the atlas. If the atlas is out of position, it can cause pressure on the arteries and veins to the brain, decreasing its performance. The atlas may also be putting pressure on the spinal cord and nerves, further reducing their ability to function correctly.

Atlas treatment calls for a consultation and examination to determine if the nervous system is affected by the atlas being out of place. If we determine it is, we take specialized X-ray studies and use spinal engineering software to find exactly where the atlas is and where it needs to be.

We then adjust the atlas with a painless, sound-wave-based treatment. Upon returning the atlas to its proper position, the circulation to the brain is restored, and communication with the nerves is improved, leading to overall improved function of the nervous system with the intent to decrease symptoms of MS and prevent further damage.
