TMJ, named for the temporomandibular joint, connects your lower jaw to your skull. This joint is located on both sides of the head, directly in front of the ears, and allows the jaw to open and close at will. TMJ is most often referred to as the set of health conditions that can affect this joint and cause pain and discomfort whenever you open and close your mouth.
These are often referred to as TMD or TMJ. These joint disorders can affect the jaw and the muscles surrounding this area, leading to the TMJ pain that patients complain about experiencing. This pain may be a tenderness in or near the joint, facial pain, or even difficulty opening and closing your mouth. Some patients suffering from TMJ disorders will complain about a clicking in the jaw when they open and close their mouth, while others will experience vertigo, ringing in the ears, or regular headaches.
